A host of competitors from last year’s Olympic Games have reportedly returned their medals after complaining they were rusty and flaking. The medals were designed by LVMH and produced by La Monnaie, an enterprise that has minted coins and medals in France since the ninth century.

A European Union chrome ban has been blamed for medals awarded in the Paris Olympic Games cracking and crumbling. Monnaie de Paris, the French mint, said the problem of the medals falling apart was down to a technical issue related to varnish.

The medals were designed by a jewelry maker owned by the French luxury conglomerate, which has declined to comment on their deterioration.

While they have refused to confirm how many medals were damaged - French outlet La Lettre claim that the number stands at over 100, with numbers relating to Paralympic medals as yet unknown - they have released a statement to Associated Press on the matter.

The designer of the medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, LVMH, has spoken out after a number of athletes handed them back.
