As wildfires continue to ravage Los Angeles, historic Black neighborhoods are experiencing catastrophic damage. In Altadena, one of the city’s historic Black communities, a 66-year-old man tragically died while attempting to save his family home of 55 years.

The working-class neighborhood of Altadena was hit especially hard by a devastating wildfire, with more than 7,000 structures lost. But people rallied to help each other. NBC News' Gadi Schwartz reports.

Kimiko Nickerson said her father Rodney insisted on staying in their family home that he purchased in 1968 for $5.

The Cassou family in Altadena narrowly escaped the Eaton Fire before their home was destroyed, carrying their wheelchair-bound grandmother out of the home.

Some residents in the Altadena neighbourhood have been returning to find their homes completely destroyed in the wildfires which ravaged the Los Angeles area this week.

Wildfires continue to rage in Los Angeles County, with over 35,000 acres scorched. Tragically, the LA County Medical Examiner has confirmed at least 10 fire-related deaths. Of the five active fires, the Palisades and Eaton fires are the most extensive.

At least 10 people have died across the Los Angeles area in the wildfires. Officials have said the true death toll is not known as the fires continue to burn.
