A bluefin tuna about the size of a motorcycle has been sold for $1.3 million (207 million yen) at Japan’s most prestigious fish market, setting the second-highest price on record during its New Year auction.

The 608-pound bluefin tuna fetched the second-highest price ever paid at the annual new year auction at Tokyo’s main fish market.

Sushi restaurateurs in Tokyo say they have paid 207m yen ($1.3m; £1m) for a bluefin tuna which is about the size and weight of a motorbike. The sale is the second highest price ever paid at the annual new year auction at Toyosu Fish Market in the Japanese capital.

It is the second highest price paid at the opening auction of the year in Tokyo's main fish market since comparable data started being collected in 1999.

A bluefin tuna was sold for $1,316,835 (207 million yen) on Sunday (January 5), marking the second-highest bid at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market's annual auction since its inception in 1999, according to market organizers.

In a spectacle that has become a cherished New Year tradition, the Onodera Group, a Michelin-starred sushi restaurateur, shelled out an astonishing 207 million yen ($1.3 million or ₹11 crore) for a bluefin tuna at Tokyo’s prestigious fish market auction.
