Bernard Georges, founder of New Bridges for Haitian Success, said ending temporary protected status will send Haitian migrants back to an island racked by gang violence.

SPRINGFIELD — Community members gathered Monday night to talk about ways to keep families together as the end of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants in Springfield approaches. According to a DHS release, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “determined that conditions in Haiti no longer meet the TPS statutory requirements,” after concluding that conditions in the country have improved sufficiently for Haitians in the U.S. to return. The DHS plans to terminate the designation effective on Sept. 2.
