President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed optimism that Russia would agree to a ceasefire in its ongoing war with Ukraine. Trump, however, refused to confirm whether he has a scheduled meeting or phone call with President Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that Ukraine had accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States, following critical peace talks between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.

While both countries claim they want peace, there's previously been significant differences between what Kyiv and Moscow have said they'd be prepared to agree to, and there's still plenty that needs to happen before fighting stops.

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that it needed to be briefed by the United States on the outcome of U.S.-Ukrainian talks in Saudi Arabia before commenting on whether a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine was acceptable to Russia.

The United States said Wednesday it was asking Russia to "unconditionally" agree to a month-long ceasefire in Ukraine, a day after US and Ukrainian officials agreed to put the plan to Moscow.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that it’s important not to “get ahead” of the question of responding to the ceasefire proposal. He told reporters that Moscow is awaiting “detailed information” about it from the U.

The resumption of U.S. military and intelligence aid for Ukraine follows a contentious White House meeting between the American and Ukrainain leaders, but Moscow is unlikely to agree to the proposed ceasefire.
