H5N1 avian influenza was detected in a flock of around 40 birds in Washington County, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced Friday. RIDEM’s Animal Health Unit has since euthanized the noncommercial farm flock, according to the department’s press release. The local food supply remains safe, RIDEM added.

Staff from DEM’s Division of Agriculture and Forest Environment’s Animal Health Unit humanely euthanized a flock of about 40 birds to minimize their suffering from the infection and prevent the spread of the disease to other birds, according to a news release. Rhode Island previously had an H5N1 infection in a noncommercial backyard flock in 2022 .
