The New York Yankees released two-time MLB batting champion DJ LeMahieu, ending his seven-year tenure with the team, they announced Thursday.
The New York Yankees made perhaps the most dramatic roster move of their season on Wednesday when they designated veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu for assignment.
Rookie Cam Schlittler was crowned the Yankees’ fastball king, overpowering the Mariners over 5.2 innings in a 9-6 victory. The 22-year-old righthander topped out at 100-mph in his major league debut. No Yankee has thrown a triple-digit fastball since Aroldis Chapman in 2022.
The DFA leaves the Yankees on the hook for the roughly $22 million left on LeMahieu’s contract through next season. The former two-time batting champion signed a six-year, $90 million deal entering the 2021 season.
The New York Yankees moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base and, as a result, DJ LeMahieu to the bench. He is not pleased with the move.
NEW YORK — Moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base doesn’t just disrupt DJ LeMahieu’s playing time routine. It effectively makes him a bench bat and nothing more moving forward for the Yankees. Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed on Tuesday afternoon that there are no plans for LeMahieu to play third base.
