A federal judge has ordered the government to arrange for the return of a Maryland father who was deported despite his protected legal status.

The court acted in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who had a court order preventing his deportation to his native country over fears he would face persecution from local gangs.

The Supreme Court told the Trump administration to take steps to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. from the maximum security facility in El Salvador.

The Supreme Court said Thursday that the Trump administration is required to "facilitate" the release of a Maryland man who was wrongly deported to an El Salvador prison. The court partly granted and partly rejected an emergency request filed by the Justice Department contesting a judge’s order that Kilmar Abrego Garcia be retrieved from a prison in El Salvador where he was sent March 15 along with men alleged to be Venezuelan gang members.

The government has said Kilmar Abrego Garcia was deported because of an "administrative error", but has fought against his return to the US.
